The fundamentals of astronomy will be covered. This course serves as an introduction to the subject for potential majors and as a survey for nonmajors who have a good high school preparation in math and science. We will cover selected topics within the solar system, galaxy, local universe, and cosmology, including the big bang theory of the origin of the universe and the discovery of planets around other stars.

Two in-semester exams, final exam, and weekly problem sets. There will also be some observing assignments that will require the students to come to the observatory on occasion at night.

This is a mathematically based introduction to astronomy for potential majors and others with a good science and math preparation. Calculus is used occasionally. Some knowledge of physics, at the level of a good high school course or introductory college course, is assumed.
