Introduction to Western Drama
ENGL 213
Fall 2006
Section: 01

This course focuses on close reading of a dozen great plays of the Western tradition, with attention to contemporary trends as well. Leitmotifs running throughout the course will include (1) the nature of dramatic heroes and antiheroes; (2) considerations of genre--tragedy, comedy, and everything in between; and (3) realism as myth--or why there's no such thing as realism (really). Not for skimmers; students should expect to read play texts with care and more than once.
