This course is an equally nontheoretical practicum in translating traditional formal verse. Works ranging from the 16th century to the present, all respecting the elements of rhyme and meter, from a variety of poetic schools and in a variety of forms. Class discussion of one another's work, fidelity, matters of style, technique--"tune and tone". |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students should consult with the instructor before registering, and should be prepared to present a brief writing sample in English, in any literary genre, preferably but not necessarily translated from the French. No single textbook will be used, but a variety of theoretical and technical articles, ancillary to the main-creative-work in the course, will be assigned.
While any student who has completed FREN 215 (with a minimum grade of B) or has placed out of FREN 215 through the placement test may sign up for this course, it is an advanced course intended for students who have already taken two courses in French beyond FREN 215 or already studied abroad in a French-speaking country. Though the course will be mostly conducted in English, students must read fluently in French.
Only COL students my take this course CR/U. All others must take it for a letter grade. Students who are not admitted to the course through pre-registration are strongly encouraged to submit an enrollment request and attend the first class. |
