What is theory? For that matter, what is feminism? How does theory matter to feminism? To address these questions we will read a wide range of theorists who consider subjectivity, identity, power, gender, sexual difference, transnational feminism, and social movement. Throughout the semester we will analyze a contradiction at the heart of feminist theories and practices: gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and class are interdependent (each depends on the others for its meaning) and autonomous (each stands alone). |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course requires background in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Preference will be given to Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies majors who have completed FGSS101, FGSS207/ANTH207, FGSS241/SISP241, FGSS269/HIST179, FGSS271/HIST273/AFAM272, FGSS277/PHIL277, FGSS278/PHIL280, or FGSS293/SISP293. This course counts toward the English Department's Theory requirement, and carries a research option that fulfills the research requirement for English majors wishing to write an honors thesis. |
