A vast amount of psychological research, across all areas of psychology, involves use of quantitative methods. Quantitative methods are those in which data are collected through measurements (e.g., response time, type of response, ratings on response scales, physiological reaction, etc.). In this course, students will learn to define hypotheses, to design and conduct studies, to appropriately analyze and interpret data, and to present results in scientific reports. Students will also learn to evaluate and critique research in the media. This is a great course for any student looking for a broadly relevant, hands-on approach to psychological research methods.
This course is similar to other methods courses in the Psychology Department except that it includes statistics as a prerequisite. This allows students to practice analyzing the data collected in class. A past or concurrent statistics course provides useful background. That said, this is not a statistics course, and all relevant statistical tools will be reviewed in class, so it may be possible to waive this prerequisite with permission of the instructor. |
