This interdisciplinary course draws on multiple approaches to understanding contemporary dance and the moving body from global perspectives. It examines an eclectic array of movement and choreographic styles with influences ranging from Asia to Africa to Europe. Much of the course focuses on the creation and performance of original choreographic material generated in class. This material will be performed both as in-class studio showings and at the Worlds of Dance concert. Students will spend the majority of class time collaborating and learning various movement possibilities. In addition, they will also learn by viewing, discussing, and writing. There will be several guest classes with instructors representing the world of global contemporary dance today, who will bring their diverse experience and unique styles to bear on our discussions. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Mandatory attendance, classroom participation and being available for all performances.
Short bi-weekly Papers (1-2 pages) and End of Semester Paper (10 pages).
No final exam. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
The course is a combination of studio and lecture. Although the majority of the course will consist of learning and performing choreographic material, it also includes critical discussions of scholarly writing, watching and analyzing choreographic sequences on film, and participating in guest master-classes. A hybrid course focusing on studio & lecture components with an emphasis on subject areas including Dance, Film Studies, Anthropology, Eurasian Studies, African-American Studies, Theater, South Asian Studies, East Asian Studies, FGSS, History, and Music.
Students will engage in observing global contemporary dance both as live and video formats, critically reading and writing about global contemporary dance, and exploring this as a cultural phenomenon. Students will engage with, from multiple learning perspectives, multiple cultural practices, values, and traditions and will be able to articulate a synthesized understanding of trends, structures, and components that are common to all. This course will count towards the dance major¿s "Research Methods / methodology" component.
Previous dance experience is not necessary. |
