Jews & America

HIST 210
Spring 2016
Section: 01
Crosslisting: AMST 223, CJST 210
Certificates: Jewish and Israel Studies

Despite their relatively small numbers, Jews have been prominent actors in the United States almost from the founding of the nation. Law, business, and commerce; labor unions, socialist and communist parties; government and politics; race and gender relations; media and music; literature, science, medicine, and the universities; crime and sports; even Christianity--all of these dimensions of American life have been notably affected by Jewish men and women.

In this course, we will look at Jewish Americans over two centuries, addressing not only their intra-group history, but also their significant and sometimes surprising impact on the larger society.
