This course will explore the dominance of Japanese horror from Edo period to contemporary films. Students will read theory of horror in addition to primary texts.
Intercultural Literacy, Interpretation
This course will teach students to analyze both textual and visual media and teach them the historical background and social contexts of Japanese/Asian horror.

This course is listed under the Certificate of Social, Cultural, and Critical Theory, and there will required heavy amounts of theoretic readings. All interested students must send a two-page (single-spaced) paper to the instructor (email@example.com) that answers the following question: Choose one theorist (e.g. Freud, Derrida, Foucault, etc.) and discuss how their theory may be used to analyze the mode of horror. You can examine a horror film/text of your choice, if you like. If you are not familiar with theory but are interested in learning more about it, send the instructor a two-page close analysis of a horror film/fiction of your choice.
