This research seminar will consider the cultural and intellectual history of New York City in the 1940s. Special attention will be given to the way New York's artists and intellectuals led the United States' transition to the post-World War II era. |

Essential Capabilities:
Interpretation, Writing
It's a writing course because the students will do a research paper and several short assignments, with revision. It's an interpretation course because students will be asked to interpret the significance of historical events and cultural artifacts.

Essays and fiction by: James Baldwin, Truman Capote, Ralph Ellison, John Hersey, Lionel Trilling, Shirley Jackson, Stanley Edgar Hyman, Mary McCarthy, Carson McCullers, James Thurber, E.B. White. Poetry by Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, Muriel Rykeyser, William Carlos Williams, Karl Shapiro. Drama by Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Thornton Wilder. In addition, contemporaneous painting, photographs, ballet, architecture, and musical theater.
