Course Cluster: Urban Studies

This course surveys the development of cities in western and non-western countries. Emphasis is placed on urban culture, migration, the global economy, gentrification, transnationalism, and xenophobia. This course highlights the intersections of race/ethnicity, class, gender, and nationality as local, national, and global geographies collide. A central objective is to think critically about the significance of American cities through comparisons with urban life in other times and places.

Essential Capabilities: Intercultural Literacy
This course examines how processes of urbanization impact social relations in western and non-western societies. Emphasis is placed on the migrations flows, political economic structures, social inequalities, and cultural formations that shape contemporary urban life. This course will help students think analytically about the trajectories of American cities through comparison with urban life across the globe.
