This course introduces students to translational research in psychology: research that draws on psychological science to inform practice. The course is built around a central case study, the acquisition of numerical concepts in deaf children. We will cover existing research on cognitive and language development, deaf education, and teaching strategies to understand the relationship between research and practice in these areas.
The service-learning component of the course, in which students will spend two hours per week in a preschool, provides a hands-on opportunity to interact with preschool children and learn firsthand about their learning environment and styles. Although the service-learning component will generally entail work in hearing preschools, opportunities will be available for observation and volunteering in schools for deaf children.
Designing, Creating, and Realizing, Logical Reasoning
Designing: Students will design materials for a single mathematics activity that draws on research on cognition and language and on models of deaf education and curriculum development.
Logical Reasoning: Student will read and critique primary source research articles and learn basic tenets of experimental logic.

Ten short assignments and/or quizzes; Final project is to systematically test and write a report about an empirically-motivated math activity for deaf preschoolers.

Only one course can be taken as non-graded towards the psychology major.
This year (2011-2012), students will begin pilot-testing and refining research-based lesson plans that were created by last year's class. Students will have a chance to try out the activities in their service-learning placements. Hands-on experience using standard tools of research methods will come from designing and implementing assessments to measure the effectiveness of the lesson plans.
