State-supported Australian cinema has commanded the attention of audiences all over the world. This course explores the unique links between nation, history, and film in the context of Australian culture. It discusses national cultural aspects as well as a universal aesthetic horizon in the production, meaning, form and style of Australian cinema. Emphasis will be placed on the indigenous (aboriginal) communities in Australian Society. Films will include (subject to availability) Dr. Miller's THE ROAD WARRIOR, Fred Schepisi's CHANT OF JIMMY BLACKSMITH, Peter Weir's PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK and THE LAST WAVE, Philip Noyce's RABBIT PROOF FENCE, Tracy Moffat's NIGHT CRIES and BEDEVILLED.
