This seminar focuses on the development of commercial and residential architecture in Chicago during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Emphasis is placed on the emergence of a regional school of architecture in relation to inherited stylistic traditions, innovations in building technique and surrounding conditions of urbanization. The works of the major figures, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright are considered for their theoretical origins and their contribution to later architecture in this century. |
