Elementary Russian I
RUSS 101
Spring 2009 not offered

This beginning course in Russian language teaches basic grammar while providing extensive practice in speaking and listening to contemporary Russian.

Essential Capabilities:
Our first year texts are based on a video that reflects contemporary life in Russia. First year Russian teaches intercultural literacy in various ways. In grammar, Russia's verbal aspect system overlaps, but often does not equate with English tenses or English conceptions of action. Verbs of motion in Russian boggle the minds of English speakers. Expressions of time and space in Russian depend upon spatial concepts intrinsic to the Russian case system. In semantics there are relatively few cognates with English. Russian history is reflected in Russian etymology (church Slavic vs.Russian roots; French influences appear in the 19th century and English influences in the late 20th century.
