Major Readings:
Lemert, Elliott, Chaffee, & Hsu (eds), "Globalization: from Ancient China to Tomorrow" (Routledge 2009) Book will include selections on the following subjects: ancient, including indigenous and classic, political empires (Han, Sulla, Babylon, Incan, among others), basic history and theory of the foundations of the modern world-system (from Iberia through the Anglo-American empire), the technological inventions of the modern period as a key to modernization, the great globalization debates of the 1980s-1900s, the post-9/11 crises and the nights terrors and rude awakening of global capitalism.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Soc 399 is a Selected Topics course and may be taken repeatedly so long as the topic or instructor is different (for example, those taking 399 Spring 09 ("Death, Waster, and Time") can repeat.

Examinations and Assignments: Short papers, group research and presentation, attendance, a major research paper. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Please do not register if you are unwilling to read all the assignments and participate in an intensive seminar class. |
