An overview of the black urban experience during the 20th century, the course covers change and continuity of work, language, customs, and leisure as both cause and consequence of a socioeconomic situation dominated by residual effects from agriculture replacement, institutional alienation, segregation, and limited mobility.

Essential Capabilities: Intercultural Literacy, Writing
Writing: extensive writing assignments with instructor feedback on the writing, including meetings prior to assignment due date.
Intercultural Literacy: deep engagement with contemporary black urban experience.
