This course examines the religious and visual traditions of Japan through the investigation of sacred sites and their pictorial representation. Such representations of sacred sites were used and viewed in different ways -- as fundraising tools, as advertisements aimed at inspiring viewers to undertake a physical journey to the illustrated site, and also as vehicles for virtual pilgrimage through the representation itself. Often these representations were regarded and treated as sacred in their own right and worshiped as such.
Each week we will immerse ourselves in a sacred site, reading about its history, deities, religious practices, and unique benefits. We will then look at how these were given visual form and the artistic language developed to endow these visual representations with the power to inspire and move contemporary audiences. |
